Some of education's most tragic events have happened in our public and private schools and universities across the country. The Columbine High School and Virginia Tech Massacres are all riveting examples of the unpredictable nature of crisis. They are reminders that the threat of school- related violence will always be present. According to the U.S. Dept. of Justice, over 15% of the students attending school in America report being either threatened or injured with a weapon and over 10% report carrying a weapon to school. Student bullying, which has been a precursor to many full blown crisis situations, is one of the most frequently reported discipline problems in schools.
Twenty years ago, the term "Lockdown" was the exception that wasn't spoken of and today it is the rule. The biggest disruptions in schools use to be gum chewing and running in the hallways and today the challenges are drug abuse, school violence and gangs. Traditional training methods are not enough to adequately prepare educators to deal with the current trends of violence in our nation's schools so the training in these areas must change.
