Workplace Violence

Workplace violence is a serious health and safety concern in the United States. According to National Crime Victimization statistics, 2 million assaults and threats of violence occur annually against Americans in the workplace. The AIHA White Paper publication tells us that workplace violence is still responsible for more than 10 percent of all workplace fatalities in the United States. The Department of Justice hosted a "Violence in the Workplace" symposium in 2002 and their report states "Estimates of costs, from lost work time and wages, reduced productivity, medical costs, workers' compensation payments, and legal and security expenses, are even less exact, but clearly run into many billions of dollars." Employees are at risk for being threatened, abused and subject to other violent behaviors from co-workers, customers, vendors, or strangers in the workplace and they must be properly trained in order to know how to respond safely to an incident of workplace violence.

Ask yourself these questions.

Do you know how to identify a potentially violent situation?

Are you adequately aware of the many different safety risks that could be lurking around the corner at your workplace?

Do you know how to respond so as to increase your safety and the safety of others if a situation should become potentially violent?

Do you feel prepared to properly document and report a threatening or violent situation?

Would you rather spend some of your budget in a proactive and preventative manner or spend much of it in attempting to defend a lawsuit where you provided no workplace violence prevention training?
